All atomic nuclei of the chemical element technetium are summarized under technetium isotopes; these all consist of an atomic nucleus with 43 protons and, in the uncharged state, 43 electrons. The difference between each technetium isotope is based on the number of neutrons in the nucleus.
Among the first 83 chemical elements, technetium and promethium are the only elements that do not have stable isotopes. Technetium is virtually non-existent in nature - at most in the smallest traces as a decay product of uranium or through electron capture from molybdenum isotopes. A total of 36 radionuclides and several metastable nuclear isomers of technetium are currently known.
Some technetium isotopes - mainly Tc-99m - are used as beta emitters and in the form of radiopharmaceuticals, especially in nuclear medicine for diagnostic purposes. The short-lived radionuclides are generated in so-called technetium generators.
