Helium-5
Properties and data of the isotope 5He.
Helium-5 is an isotope of the element helium, which consists of two protons and three neutrons in the nucleus. Unlike other isotopes of helium that occur in the atmosphere through natural processes, helium-5 is very rare and is usually only produced through the influence of cosmic rays that originate in outer space. 5He is radioactive and has a half-life of approximately 7.6 × 10-22 seconds, which means it exists for a very short time. Helium-5 is of interest in nuclear physics and astrophysics because it could shed light on the origin and structure of the universe.
