NMR Active Nuclei

List of NMR-active nuclides or isotopes and their properties.

The decisive prerequisite for the suitability of an atomic nucleus for nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is a magnetic moment μ ≠ 0. In addition, a number of other factors play a role: the natural abundance, the absolute sensitivity of an atomic nucleus, a large magnetic moment, the nuclear angular momentum, etc.

The table below lists the naturally occurring and some artificially produced NMR-active nuclides as well as some NMR-relevant properties. Further data can be accessed via the table of Isotopes or via the respective links (column 1).

The following data can be found in the respective columns:

1 - The nuclide and the link to the data sheet.

2 - The symbol AZE: Z = atomic number, proton number. A = mass number. E = element symbol.

3 - Number of neutrons in the nuclide.

4 - Spin and parity.

5 -  μ = magnetic dipole moment,
    Gy = gyromagnetic ratio (107 rad T-1 s-1),
     Q = quadrupole moment (fm-2).

6 -  v = resonance frequency v0 at 1 Tesla T,
    H0 = relative sensitivity based on 1H = 1,000, H0 = const,
    V0 = relative sensitivity related to 1H = 1.000, v0 = const.

7 - ABUN = Natural occurrence of the isotope (percentage related to the respective element).
